No Upcoming Compost Give Away

There will be no compost giveaways at any facility of the NYC Dept. of Sanitation system this spring and most likely next fall. Last fall, the DSNY did not collect leaves, the major component of their compost. Until our financial situation improves, I don't think composting will be a part of our municipal programming.

We'll have to do it ourselves. Find an empty lot in the neighborhood, begin a block-wide collection of vegetable food scraps, leaves, grass clippings, coffee grinds. Distribute to those who want it on the block. We're on our own now and this could be a good thing.

  1. That's a huge bummer. I was planning to go down to staten island to get compost. I'd love to get a community compost project together in my neighborhood (Bushwick, BK). Do you know of any places in the city that are already doing this?

  2. Not off the top of my head, but I'm sure there are community gardens doing it. The Lower East Side Ecology Center composts, but I don't think you keep the results. I would look for a space in your neighborhood that you could do it and try to get compostables from neighbors and area businesses.

I miss it too, I would fill my veg planters with the stuff.

  3. I think that the Greene Acres garden and others work together on a pretty strong community composting project in Bed Stuy and Fort Green. You should look them up.

Added Value down in Red Hook also does a great job
