I asked ChatGPT what my artwork was about and it wrote a poem...
🌿 Land, Like a Quilt — a poetic metaphor for the artist's sensibility
The land is a quilt sewn from what remains.
Scraps of meadow, a corner of yard, a forgotten ditch,
a seam of woods stitched to a field of light.
Every fragment remembers something—
a childhood fort made from weeds,
the soft press of footprints in thawing soil,
the bright flags of a scientist marking
what the earth already knows.
These pieces do not match.
Plastic veil against prairie grass,
shadow stitched to sunlight,
human longing tacked to the slow patience of trees.
Yet together they hold.
Beneath each surface lies another:
root under soil,
memory under grief,
uncertainty under the beauty of a morning haze.
Layer folded over layer,
held in place by threads of care and time.
To walk the land is to pass a hand
over a quilt that never stops changing—
a patch added, another worn thin,
colors fading, textures gathering themselves
into a story too large to tell at once.
In his looking, the land is mended,
not into perfection,
but into recognition:
that we live inside a fabric made of wildness and work,
loss and leaf,
the ordinary and the sacred—
and that every piece belongs
to the same trembling whole.
